LANDSCAPES AND GARDENS OF MONFERRTO’S HILLS

Day 1

Departure from Torino Airport/ Train Station for Acqui Terme to visit Monterosso and Villa  Ottolenghi.

In 1920 the Counts Ottolenghi, Arturo and Herta  von wedekind zu Horts, entrusted the design of the villa to Federico d’ Amato and then to the well known architect Marcello Piacentini. The patronage of Ottolenghi brought many artists to Monterosso: Ferruccio Ferrazzi, Fortunato Depero, Adolfo Wildt, Libero Andreotti, Fiore Martelli, Arturo Martini, Rosario Murabito, Venanzo Crocetti and  Ferruccio Ferrazzi. Arturo Martini, enriched the villa with some of his  works such as  Tobiolo, Adamo and  Eva, i Leoni di Monterosso. After the death of the Counts, their son Astolfo ordered to complete the villa and the   park,  designed by  Pietro Porcinai. Not far from the Villa,  the Mausoleo , today “Tempio (temple) di Herta”,  is a  construction that is known as  “ Paradiso Terrestre( Heaven on earth). The big portal in copper , nichel and carved bronze, work of Ernesto and Mario Ferrari, is a prelude to the beauty of frescos by Ferruccio Ferrazzi and mosaics realized by Ravenna’s Musiva School.

Around the villa there is  a garden, a well, a big tank , and a path that goes around  it, a wisteria pergola, a swimming pool, a  canteen and  graffiti.  Time for Lunch buffet  in the  garden of Villa Ottolenghi.

Departure for Casale Monferrato.

Visit to Andre Maurice’s factory,  an Italian firm leader in the field of Cashmere MADE IN ITALY.

Day 2

Breakfast in hotel.

In the morning, visit to  Gabriella Rivalta’s gold laboratory, famous for her gold creations, inspired by flowers. Gabriella will open for us her private garden.

Next visit is Gipsoteca Bistolfi,  located  in the beautiful monastery of Santa Croce, whose cloister presents frescos of the beginning of 600’ , and de La Filarmonica Palace. The residence of Gozzani Family di treville overlooks via Mameli. Marquis Giovanni ordered to build the palace designed by Giovanni Batista Scapitta (1711), along  San Paolo contrada, but the works,  stopped due to the death of the designer, later on continued under the supervision of Luganese Giacomo Zanetti.  For more than 170 years the elegant halls of the ancient dwelling have been hosting the prestigious Accademy Filarmonica of Casale Monferrato, founded  on the 27 November 1827, today presided over  Mrs/Ms Serena Ceritti Monina. Time for independent lunch. ( it may be held inside the restaurant of the Academy). In the afternoon,  transfer to Gabaino Castle, located  over the po valley, one of the oldest castles of Monferrato.  Due to its position, the castle was a place   of attacks and wars.  Families such as Montiglio ,  Gonzaga,  Duke Ferdinando di  Mantova and Agostino Durazzo Pallavicini owned the castle. In 1622, Duke Ferdinando di Mantova  bequeathed the castle to Agostino Durazzo Pallavicini. The restoration of the castle, began in 1908 by Marquis  Giacomo Durazzo Pallavicini, and was  completed in  1935 by Marquise Matilde Durazzo Pallacivini dei Principi Giustiniani.   The castle’s labyrinth, historic monument, is one of the rare examples of the historic gardens of Piemonte.  Designed by the architect Lamberto Cusani in the 1930s, the labyrinth expresses many meanings, – mythological, religious, philosophical and mathematic journeys- and is part of the restoration project of the castle  completed in 1935 by the Marquise Matilde Durazzo Pallavicini. Today the owners Cattaneo Adorno  Giustiniani produces prestigious wine.  The firm covers an area of 260 hectares, whose 20 are dedicated to the production of wine.

In the late afternoon, return to the hotel. Dinner included in Osteria Amarotto. The Osteria owned by the same  family for many years, is specialized in Monferrina cuisine.
