Tour of  Riviera del Brenta.

Visit to the park of Villa Pisani in Stra, dubbed the Versailles of Brenta for its impressive structure. The park of Villa Pisani, winner of the award “The most beautiful Park of Italy in 2008”, occupies an entire cove of Brenta’ s canal. It covers an area of 11 hectares and its external perimeter is about 1.500 meters. The park was realized before the villa, designed by the architect Girolamo Frigimelica de’ Roberti from Padova, author of the famous maze with concentric hedges as well as pavilions such as L’esedra with two galleries of wisteria in the corners, a small tower in the middle of the maze, and the stables located on the big central parterre. The arrangement of the park recalls the French models applied by Andre’ Le Notre in Versailles, and intertwines with the venetian tradition of  Giardino Cintato, ( enclosed garden).

1839 is the year when the second ice-house was built, located on the west part of the stables among the grove. An artificial hill  was realized in 1853, following the failed assassination attempt on Emperor Francesco Giuseppe by a Hungarian separatist, and proof of it is the inscription carved in the obelisk. The park has been restored, and houses  a  rich botanic collection. Afterwards, visit to the romantic Villa Widmann in Mira. It features the  Carpini’s galleries, and the suggestive lake full of cypresses  with reddish bark.

Time for independent lunch.

In the afternoon, tour of Villa Tron in Dolo.

The Park that surrounds the villa, the oratory and colonnade, designed as romantic garden, ( XIX century) is without doubts one of the most excellent parks in Riviera del Brenta.  Almost entirely enclosed by a wall, it covers an area of almost 5 hectares, and includes a small lake, streams, man-made hills, parterres, woods and winding trials. A ruin covered by  an age-old tree, on  top of a small hill, encloses a well-preserved ice-house. In the Brolo area, people are still cultivating  ancient varieties of fruit trees, making beautiful juices and jams.

Return to the hotel and dinner.

Day 3

Breakfast in hotel. You meet  with the Tour Leader in hotel.

Visit to Cappello Palace in Rio Marin, seat of the Soprintendenza per i Beni archittetonici e per il paesaggio, (Italian authority for architectural  assets and landscape), for the  provinces of Venezia, Belluno, Padova and Treviso. The palace was built in the late XVI century, commissioned by the powerful Soranzo family. Later on, it was passed on to other families and one of them was the Cappello. For a period of time, the palace was used as a  military base.  For some decades it was abounded, and in the XX century, the palace was restored.

Next visit is Gradenigo Palace in Rio Marin.  It was commissioned by the architect Domenico Margutti, a disciple of Longhena, at the end of XVII century in order to be a giant dwelling for  Gradenigo family. It is one of the most illustrious Patrician-venetian palaces. During the period of its splendour, the palace was a venue for  big parties which were held in the gardens of Gradenigo Palace..

At the beginning  of 900’, the same gardens inspired the Poet Gabriele D’ Annunzio

for his novel the Flame. The restoration work of the palace took place in 1999.

Time for independent lunch.
In the afternoon,  visit to the cloisters and vegetable gardens of the two convents:  Saint Francesco della Vigna in Castello and Redentore alla Giudecca.

Return to the hotel and dinner.

Day 4

Breakfast in hotel.

Visit to the Vendramin Foscarini dei  Carmini Palace’s garden.

Belonging to a seventeenth-century palace characterized by the loggia-library of Doge Marco Foscarini, after a period of abandonment, the garden has been restored as  a airy and suggestive place  among walls of noble dwellings.

Afterwards, visit to the park of  San Clemente Island.

Surrounded by a fascinating view over the lagoon,  the  Ducal  Palace and San Marco, the park  extends over a surface of  7 hectares in an area that today is occupied by San Clemente Palace Hotel.

Hospice for pilgrims, and soldiers going to the Holy Land, hermitage of Camaldoli rich in works of art, structure to welcome  illustrious guests of Serenissima or to provide assistance for the nobles with infective illnesses, this is the history of  the island up to the middle of 800’ when the Austrians transformed it into a female mental institution, leaving intact the ancient church where even today masses and elegant weddings take place.

Time for independent lunch.

In the afternoon, drive to Cannaregio to visit Contarini dal Zaffo Garden, in the past known as a meeting place for artists.  It is one of the most popular gardens of Venice during the renaissance.

Afterwards, tour of Rizzo Patarol Palace’s garden, a vast historic garden with romantic tastes. The ancient ruin and the elegant loggia are a must see.

At the end return to the hotel and dinner.
